Good to know about Berlin

Berlin is a city that's always on the go, constantly reinventing itself and becoming one of the most creative and cultural hubs in Europe. As a result, it's a place where everyone can find something to enjoy – making it a valid destination.

Berlin is also a family-friendly destination with plenty of green spaces and sparkling lakes. In addition, the city is home to a thriving start-up scene and some of the best nightlife.

This city has everything you could want, from five-star hotels to relaxing spas to Michelin-starred restaurants. There's no shortage of options for history buffs – after all, the city was at the heart of the dreaded 20th century.

History of Berlin

Back in 1237, Berlin was just a small town. It was populated mainly by merchants, hunters, and fishers who remained independent from the outside world for centuries.

Way back in 1415, members of the Hohenzollern family were ruling over Brandenburg. This was back when Berlin was just a state ruled by the Roman Empire. But by the end of the fifteenth century, Berlin had become the capital of Brandenburg. And the Hohenzollern family continued to rule over Berlin until 1918.

East Germany built The Berlin Wall in 1961 to keep its people in and the West Germans out. But it wasn't just a physical barrier – it was also an ideological one. The Soviet Union claimed it was protecting its people from possible attacks from the West, but it was just an excuse to take control of immigration from East to West Germany.

Berlin is rapidly becoming one of the greatest cities in Europe. It's modern, cosmopolitan, and culturally fascinating. Plus, it's the hub of many new movements in Europe. As a result, Berlin will be a significant player on the European stage for years to come.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Berlin is from May to October. The weather is usually moderate during this period, making it perfect for exploring the city on foot. There are also plenty of green spaces to relax in and outdoor dining options to enjoy.

Not many tourists visit in winter because the weather isn't as welcoming. However, festive hubs like the Christmas markets are the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit, no matter how dreary the weather may be outside.

Places to Visit and Things to Do

There is no shortage of options when it comes to places to visit and things to do in Berlin. Berlin has something for everyone, from world-renowned museums and historical landmarks to vibrant nightlife and endless shopping.

And with so many incredible attractions within easy reach, it's no wonder this lively city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. So whether you're looking for culture, excitement, or just a place to relax and take in the sights, be sure to add Berlin to your travel list. Next to the Berlin Zoo, here are some of the highlights:

Berlin Wall

Some parts of the Berlin wall were preserved, including a section now a free museum on Bernauer Straße. The East Side Gallery is another section of the wall that's now a beautiful gallery displaying colorful murals from local and international artists.

Christmas Markets

If you're looking for a festive way to spend the holiday season, then be sure to check out Berlin's famous Christmas markets in November and December.

With dozens of markets to choose from, you're sure to find one that suits your taste. From hot drinks and food to artisanal goods and sweets, there's something for everyone at the Christmas markets.

Brandenburg Gate

This big ol' gate is a fun and unique attraction in Berlin. In 1791, it was just one of many old city gates around the city. But now, it's the city's signature attraction.

Museum Island

Here, you'll find the city's iconic Berliner Dom and several other large and historical museums. It's an ideal spot for anyone who loves stunning architecture and learning about different cultures.

Soviet War Memorials

The Red Army liberated Berlin in 1945, and there are many memorials to them scattered throughout the city. The biggest ones are in Schönholzer Heide, Tiergarten, and Treptower Park, the most prominent being in Treptower Park.

Teufelsberg

Also, check out Teufelsberg. It's an artificial hill once used as a listening station during the Cold War. Now it's an open-air gallery with some great views of the city. And if you don't feel like going up to Teufelsberg, you can always check out Drachenberg, the other hill next to it.

Victory Column

The Victory Column is a great place to get a bird's eye view of Berlin. You can see the Tiergarten and the Brandenburg Gate from up high. It's a great way to orient yourself in the city.

Berlin Cathedral

Visit the Berlin Cathedral and learn all about its significance, or you can relax on the grass in front of it. Either way, it's a great experience. Plus, it's conveniently located on the museum island, close to many other old museums.

Berlin Television Tower

The Berlin Television Tower, or as locals like to call it, the Fernsehturm, is another site to visit. This towering structure stands 368m tall, making it the tallest building in the city. Visitors can enjoy a unique 360° panorama of Berlin from the top. The Fernsehturm is a sight to behold.

Culture and Customs

Germany has come a long way since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. After years of being divided, East and West Berlin were finally united, and Germany has been thriving ever since. Today, it is one of the most powerful countries in Europe.

Berlin is an excellent place for tourists who want to learn some German words. Danke for "thank you," hallo or Guten tag for "hello," and bitte for "please." However, many people are also proficient in English.

Moreover, if you want to make a good impression in Germany, be punctual and organized. Showing up on time to formal engagements and business meetings is highly valued in German culture.

Also, remember, when you're out at a restaurant, never leave your money on the table after the check comes. Instead, hand it directly to the waiter and ask for your change. Most places already include a tip in the bill, but if the service was outstanding, feel free to leave an extra 10-15%.

Make sure you have some euros on hand as well. The city's official currency is the euro, and while most places accept major credit cards, it's always good to have some cash on hand just in case. Plus, who doesn't love a little spending money while traveling? Just be sure to check the current exchange rate before you go.

What to Eat

The city boasts a wide variety of food options, from traditional German cuisine to delicious ethnic dishes to healthy vegetarian fare. And, of course, you can't miss the chance to try some of the authentic Berliner dishes while you're here.

Check out the variety of sausages available – from bratwurst to bockwurst to the unique currywurst. Or go for a classic Wiener schnitzel. And for some delicious pork-centric cuisine? Then head on over to Zur letzten Instanz in Berlin. This historic restaurant has been serving mouth-watering "Eisbein" (pork knuckle) dishes for centuries and is worth visiting if you're in the area. Plus, it's conveniently located just one block away from the Klosterstraße U-Bahn station.

Berlin is also home to a large community of Turks (more than 200,000), and their culinary influence can be seen all over the city. For a taste of some delicious Turkish treats, head to the Turkish Market in the neighborhood of Neukölln.

Also, it would be best if you tried a döner kebab sandwich when you're in Berlin. It's a delicious Turkish dish that immigrants first introduced. Some people say it was invented in Berlin, but who knows for sure? Either way, it's worth a try.

This delectable dish includes a special bread filled with thin beef, lamb, or chicken slices, with lettuce, onion, tomato, and yogurt sauce topping. Many street vendors sell them in various corners of the city.

Don't Forget Beer

No visit to Berlin is complete without sampling some of the delicious local Beer. Beer is a big part of German culture, and sixteen-year-olds can legally drink fermented beverages. Germany takes the quality of its Beer very seriously, so you're in for a treat. Germany takes the quality of its Beer very seriously, so make sure to raise a glass (or two, or three...) to the beer culture during your visit.

Where to Stay in Berlin

Berlin is the perfect canvas for your next photography project. Capturing the grit and character of neighborhoods like Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg will produce some fantastic photos.

Or, if you're looking for something more upscale, check out Mitte and Charlottenburg. These areas offer a more upscale scene, while other sites offer a more relaxed atmosphere.

For a taste of Berlin's alternative scene? Then Kreuzberg is the place for you. Just a short walk from Mitte, this vibrant neighborhood is home to many of the city's top attractions. Mitte is also great for first-time visitors.

Friedrichshain is another perfect area for you. This central neighborhood is full of cool bars and clubs that will keep you entertained.

Furthermore, located West of central Berlin, Charlottenburg is a top choice for city dwellers. And if you're looking for a great place to stay in Berlin for families, Prenzlauer Berg is the perfect spot. It's one of the best neighborhoods in the city.

The city offers numerous luxury hotels with spacious rooms and suites. From Art Deco style to modern design hotels with roof terraces, everything is represented in Berlin.

Development of Luxury Tourism in Berlin

This German metropolis has something for everyone, and its popularity is only increasing. Berlin now ranks among the world's most popular tourist destinations, with 15 million visitors each year.

No matter your opinions on tourism, there's no denying that it's a robust industry. With 240,000 jobs available and sales of at least 6 billion euros in Berlin alone, everyone has plenty of opportunities.

Moreover, Berlin has a fantastic array of modern hotels to choose from — over 130,000 beds. And with new hotels in the works, it's clear that the tourism industry believes in the city's potential.

Retailers in the city benefit significantly from tourism. Tourists account for 40% of sales in malls and major shopping areas, totaling four billion euros.

Tourism also has a positive effect on the city's economy by helping to spread an image of Berlin as a dynamic and exciting place. This makes the city more attractive to new businesses and highly skilled workers.

How to Get Around

The best way to get around Berlin is with the S-Bahn or the U-Bahn. These trains are a part of the city's BVG public transport system and will get you where you need to go. You can also reach the Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt by train. The railway station is directly below Terminal 1, so it's easy to get to.

Berlin also offers a bus and tram system to help you get where you need to go. Just keep in mind that service is a little slower than other transportation methods. But not to worry - if you're using the Berlin WelcomeCard, you'll be able to ride the bus and trams as much as you want without worrying about paying for each ride.

In every big city, driving isn't the best option: you'll be stuck in traffic and won't find a parking spot. So instead, rent a bike and explore the city on two wheels. If you prefer, there are plenty of taxis that you can hail on the street or schedule in advance.

How to Stay Safe

Watch out for pickpockets. They tend to target tourists on public transportation, especially at major tourist attractions and during rush hour. So keep your valuables close to you and be aware of your surroundings.
