Domaine de Primard extends over more than 30 hectares on both sides of the river Eure: its layout is representative of the pleasure estates of the Ancien Régime: it consists of a noble house, old agricultural buildings surrounding an orchard, a farm and a longère, a woodshed and a vegetable garden. Woods, meadows, and parks are laid out all around. Built at the end of the 18th century, Primard is a perfect example of French-style orderliness and classicism.
The gardens surrounding the house highlight the layout of the buildings and integrate the surrounding nature. But the specificity of the place lies above all in the omnipresence of water: whether it be the banks of the Eure River which runs for several kilometers along the Domaine, the moat in which the House is reflected, the pond hosting wild birds, or the small stream meandering from east to west through the gardens. From the Château's adjoining halls, this impression is even more striking: wherever you look, the water sparkles. As a result, Primard takes the shape of an island.
In Primard, the hectic pace of everyday life fades away, time slows down, and everyone finally gets to enjoy life, the real thing. More than a destination, Primard is a world in itself. It is a journey, a home, a retreat, a refuge.
In Primard, the hectic pace of everyday life fades away, time slows down, and everyone finally gets to enjoy life, the real thing. More than a destination, Primard is a world in itself. It is a journey, a home, a retreat, a refuge.
Nature, whether wild, mastered, or even domesticated, is essential to understanding the site because Primard is, above all, a garden. Its richness comes from its diversity: from the plains where horses frolic to the rich composition of its boxwood patches populated with old rose bushes. The project carried out by Jacques Wirtz is exceptional. For more than 30 years, the garden has been embellished by adding tree species with magnificent autumn colors that make up a rare arboretum, a collection of flowering shrubs, and a charming rose garden with over 250 different varieties. The presence of animals in semi-liberty, together with the magnificent spectacle of wild animals that regularly cross the estate, enliven the paths and canals, creating a living and constantly changing landscape.
At Primard, the culinary treats are masterminded by the multi-starred Chef Éric Frechon and executed by Chef Yann Meinsel. The cuisine exalts the authentic country atmosphere of the venue, in three different ways and three other places, for a unique experience each time. Domaine de Primard is linked to the seasons and comes from the best local producers in an eco-responsible approach. The fruits and vegetables come in part from the organic vegetable garden.
Églantine - Located in the Maison du Verger, its large bay windows open onto the orchard to the south and the rose garden to the east. The mirrors covering its walls infinitely reflect the surrounding park. Breaking with the usual cuisine codes served in luxury hotels, Éric Frechon dares to create pure and unadorned gastronomy that brings the raw power of nature to the plate. Here the luxury is not more than sophistication. Still, the best local products' excellence is magnified with respect and delicacy: whole truffles in puff pastry, whole celery cooked in earthenware... Elegance is combined with authenticity for genuine, sincere, and straightforward gastronomy.
Octave, Primard's Bistrot, unfolds along with the orchard. On sunny days, the terrace stretches out on the grass between the apple and cherry trees. The room is in the style of Anglo-Norman restaurants: wainscoting, bricks, and wide floorboards. The large fireplace inspires traditional cooking, just like at home. Guests can watch mature meats and free-range poultry cooking on the rotisserie or the spit, family dishes, and seasonal vegetables simmering gently in the hearth. From gratin dauphinoise to grilled pork chop with vine shoots, Éric Frechon offers the ultimate version of the great classics of bourgeois cuisine from the best houses.
La Cuisine du Château - Set up in the old kitchen of the Maison sur l'Eure, around the period fireplace, the La Cornue stove reigns supreme. Nothing seems to have changed in the décor for decades. For lunch and dinner, the intimate atmosphere brings back the family spirit of yesteryear and invites you to an exclusive experience with the collaboration of Éric Frechon. The kitchen is transformed into a private dining room, welcoming 2, 4, 6, or 12 guests around the large central table. The chef cooks specially for you, with a menu tailored to the season and the moment's mood - a rare moment in time.
Des Ronds Dans L'eau - Different areas have been set up in the Domaine to enjoy the moment and rediscover the pleasure of making rings in the water...The main bar is located on the ground floor of the Maison sur l'Eure. It serves the adjoining halls as well as the terrace on the Eure. It offers a wide choice of cocktails and wines and different vintages of Veuve Clicquot Champagne. The greenhouse of the Roseraie has been transformed into a winter garden and welcomes you throughout the day with fruit juice or tea. Finally, hidden in a meander of the Eure behind the pool, you will discover the Veuve Clicquot bar on the river. A wooden deck projected on the water is the ideal place to settle down at the end of the day. The golden light reflects on the water, and the spectacle of the river takes us into an unreal time.
Susanne Kaufmann Spa - Located on the site of the old woodshed, the 450m2 spa is built on two floors. The wet area houses a sauna, hammam, and hot and cold jacuzzies on the ground floor, along with the orchard. On the first floor, you will find four massage rooms (one of them double), a coaching and a fitness room equipped with WaterRower materials.
The treatments and massages follow the protocols developed by Susanne Kaufmann in the Austrian Alps. Passionate about the benefits of plants, Susanne Kaufmann is directly inspired by the surrounding nature and combines plants from the mountains, forests, and plains of her region with state-of-the-art active ingredients. Its cosmetics are thus created from precious natural essences, oils, and pure, unprocessed substances. The formulas' active plant ingredients are exceptionally high, and energy-rich oils are used as carriers.
These ingredients have been specially selected for their targeted action and their perfect bio-compatibility for immediate and visible effects. In addition, Susanne Kaufmann cosmetics are also known for their ultra-comfortable and pleasant texture with systematically dermatologically tested formulas and non-allergenic natural fragrances. These qualities make it one of the most internationally recognized brands in natural organic skincare.
The artist Jacques Wirtz, born in 1924, is one of the most influential landscape artists of the 20th century. He designed the Carrousel gardens between the Louvre and the Tuileries in France. His recognizable style combines very orderly hedge structures with the undulating forms of boxwood topiaries. No two of his gardens are the same, and his adaptation to the site, the preservation of essential subjects by incorporating them into the final design, as well as the multitude of 'gardens' within the garden - which are as many surprises for the visitor - are the characteristic features of the landscape gardener. Primard appears as a condensed version of this style to which the site's romanticism and the subtle tastes of its patron are added. In the rigour of the layout of its boxwoods, one must appreciate the lightness and elegance of a rambling rose.
Thus guided for more than 30 years, the garden has blossomed and been enriched by rare trees with magnificent autumn colours and shrubs whose early flowering heralds a bright spring at the end of winter. Hundreds of rosebushes, some of which now climb over thirty metres into the foliage of the trees, pastel-coloured peonies and perennials cover the undergrowth...
Primard is home to wildlife endemic to the region as well as semi-captivity domestic animals that maintain the meadows. These animals, both domestic and wild, live in peace in Primard. They are part of the landscape and help to define it and bring it to life. They must be respected and not frightened.
