If you are looking for a healthy holiday experience, you might already have Castel Fragsburg and Merano on your bucket list. This Alpine town is a honey pot for health-conscious individuals in the South Tyrol region. On the impressive cliff overlooking Merano's rooftops, you will find the 17th-century hunting manor, now known as Castel Fragsburg.
You can't be more wrong if you assume it to be a traditional five-star spa. However, the hotel is not just about relaxation. It focuses on actual personal transformation. Once you stay here, you will surely leave both energized and inspired by their unique approach to mind-body-spirit wellbeing.
You will find Hotel Castel Fragsburg tucked against the southern slopes of the Dolomites, high above Merano valley. The elevated location offers some of the best South Tyrolean views in the enchanting landscape. Mountains, vineyards, apple trees, and beautiful wildflowers surround this historic hunting lodge.
You can hop on a train from Bolzano and reach here in 40 minutes. Or, take a three hours flight from Verona, Innsbruck, or Venice airports. Moreover, once you are in Merano, you can take a bus, a train, or a taxi or drive to the hotel in a mere 15 minutes.
Although the resort offers a fantastic experience, other nearby attractions include UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites and the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. And of course, there is Merano town with its alpine air and enjoyable activities.
The building was first erected as a hunting lodge in 1624 for the associated castle, now lovingly called Castel Fragsburg Paternum. It served as a privileged meeting place for the castle's aristocratic lords for centuries. However, the structure still bears authenticity and traditional charm.
In 1954, the Ortner family bought the Castel Fragsburg as private property. They then refurbished it little by little to transform it into a modern holding yet retaining its historical pedigree. Moreover, Alexander Ortner and his sons, the current owners, are doing their best to ensure it keeps up with modern times. This is all while preserving its historical core and classical touch. Today, it is the smallest 5-star hotel in the South Tyrol area.
The hotel boasts 20 suites, each carefully decorated to emphasize its historical character and individuality. Antique furniture, faded florals, wooden fittings, and a touch of Art Deco portray the old style of the hunting lodge.
All the twenty suites are individually designed with particular guests in mind. For example, the Suite Royale features a four-poster bed, precious lace, and a fairy tale flair. On the other hand, the Eagle's Nest Suite is more suitable for couples. It has a king-sized bed, approximately 18 square meters of rooftop terrace, and lounge chairs.
Other categories include Suite Deluxe, Junior Suite, and Double room deluxe. Each has one or two balconies that offer superb panoramic views of the 50,000 square meters hotel garden, the Texel Group Mountains, or the valley below.
Additionally, the bathrooms all include modern amenities. For example, double sinks and a Victoria & Albert shower- bathtub combo. You'll also receive complimentary designer Aromatherapy Associates toiletries.
As a guest at Castel Fragsburg, you experience a world of exquisite alpine-Mediterranean cuisine.
The day starts with the award-winning Breakfast Royale. Then, the panoramic terrace restaurant, Orangerie, serves a complete selection of cold meats and cheeses, eggs, and crepes to order. Also available are fresh juices, smoothies, bread, yogurt, cakes, fruit, and superfoods like spirulina and chia seeds. Moreover, all the food is made from only the best ingredients from South Tyrol. The fruits, herbs, and vegetables mostly come from the Fragsburg Soul Garden, which grows and ripens naturally.
The garden also provides ingredients for the hotel's gourmet restaurant, Prezioso. Headed by Michelin Star awarded chef Egon Heiss, the restaurant serves gourmet cuisine prepared using natural ingredients. Additionally, dinner here is a whole five-course meal affair.
Combining the fresh ingredients from the Fragsburg Soul Garden with organic supplies, the Sarntaler prepares award-winning pure and healthy delicacies. A fine wine selection, majorly consisting of Italian and South Tyrolean finery, underlines the five-course meal. You can also choose to order your culinary highlight of the day à-la-carte.
The hotel also houses a one-of-a-kind alchemistic spa, Castellum Natura. Here, they use the alchemic teachings and the knowledge of ancient herbal medicine to provide harmonizing body treatments. Book yourself for a massage or a healing bath to reconnect with yourself. They also create personalized treatments according to what your body needs. Moreover, there is a wide range of traditional remedies. These include a Tyrolean hay bath, an outdoor wooden bath, and many other natural beauty treatments.
Furthermore, all the care products used at the healing spa Castellum Natura are freshly made. They come from the alchemical recipes of naturopath Renate De Mario Gamper. Additionally, they avoid entirely packaged products providing you with a truly organic and natural spa experience.
There is also a steam bath, a sauna, an infrared cabin, and a heated outdoor pool. However, the pool is only accessible on long sunny days from May to October.
Although there is no valet service, the hotel provides ample parking space for its guests. Stay in touch with the world thanks to the complimentary Wi-Fi available all over the property. You can hire mountain bikes to tour the area for free. The hotel also arranges wine tasting, Merano city tours, workshops, and retreats upon request. If you want to see Europe's tallest waterfall, it is only a short hike from the hotel.
Castel Fragsburg indeed lives up to its hype as the smallest 5-star hotel. Some people call it a boutique hotel, or a hideaway, while others call it a luxury hotel. But Castel Fragsburg claims itself as a place of refuge where you get to reconnect with nature. Everything here, be it food or care products, is entirely natural and free of additives. So you can make the best of this all-natural experience to inspire and energize yourself before heading back to the humdrum of your regular life.
