Good to know about Mykonos

Mykonos is an idyllic Greek island that has become a popular tourist destination for travelers worldwide. Its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and picturesque whitewashed buildings make it easy to see why it is a must-visit destination. But before you go, it's essential to plan.

Our Mykonos travel guide will help you maximize your trip and ensure you get the most out of your time in this stunning Greek paradise. From the best places to stay to the best attractions, our guide will provide all the information you need to plan the perfect Mykonos vacation.

History

Mykonos has a lively nightlife, gorgeous waters, and a party atmosphere. Mykonos is an island with a rich history dating back thousands of centuries. According to archaeological finds and historical sources, the ancient city evolved in the 11th Century B.C. The Ionians are one of four major Greek tribes from Ancient Greece.

The Chora is where the Ionians settled from Athens with their leader. Mykonos also had close relationships with Delos. The economic growth of Delos' neighbor gave Mykonos a long period of prosperity during the glory years. However, the island returned to anonymity after the Delos disaster.

Mykonos was a small island with few agricultural resources. The Romans ruled the island during the Roman Empire. The Venetians took control of the island in 1204. Pirates, Catalans, and Turks also occupied the island during the Orlof years. Mykonos was also a crucial part of the Greek Independence struggle.

After relative obscurity, they discovered Mykonos again in the mid-20th century. Not only were foreigners there, but also the local population. Famous people are drawn to the important discoveries made on Delos Island, a neighboring island. The island was soon visited by politicians, artists, and other high-ranking personalities from around the globe. Mykonos quickly gained a solid reputation among international bon viveurs. The island's residents also quickly adjusted to new circumstances and created a model for topic tourism. Mykonos now has a wide range of quality services and facilities that can please every visitor.

Best Time to Visit

Mykonos boasts 300 days of sunshine, meaning it has sweltering, dry summers and mild winters. However, Mykonos has a relatively windy climate. It is usually slightly more relaxed than other islands during summer. The Aegean Meltemi winds blow between June and September, strongest from mid to late summer. This makes it a prime time to be able to windsurf.

It is best to book your Mykonos vacation between June-September, as the weather is warmer and the water is excellent for swimming. Moreover, May and October have warm weather and smaller crowds.

Things to Do and Places to Visit

These are some of the best things to do and places to visit in Mykonos.

Mykonos Windmills

This is the first thing you see as you approach the harbor. The Venetians would have constructed the row of seven white windmills in the 16th century.

They were located near the harbor and used to mill grain offloaded from ships. The mills, which have become a symbol of the entire island, are just southwest of Alefkandra. The road also has a small gift shop, where you can join the many photographers who take photos of the mills against the sky and sea.

Matogianni Street

Matogianni Street is a street running north to south through Mykonos Town. It has small alleys darting off it, where all the action occurs. You can wander through souvenir shops, jewelry stores, or boutiques daily.

If you feel hungry, you can opt for souvlaki and gyro. Or, you can sit down at any of the many tavernas. Moreover, in the evening, you'll find various romantic restaurants and bars open until the early hours.

Delos

The old harbor has the most precious archaeological sites in Greece. Only a few kilometers from Mykonos' southwest coast is the island of Delos. If you're familiar with Olympian Greek mythology, Delos may be the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo.

It was a holy sanctuary for over a thousand years. There is much to see, including the Terrace of the Lions, several market squares, and the Theatre Quarter with its magnificent mosaics.

Little Venice

Little Venice is the most notable area of Mykonos Town. It is a collection of colorful Cycladic houses on the waterfront. The wooden balconies also have a beautiful view of Mykonos' most romantic sunset. You can also admire Little Venice bay from the Alefkandra area and the windmills just a few steps to the south. However, the best time to visit Little Venice is at sunset.

Paraportiani Church

This church is one the most photographed in all of Greece. Mykonos has 365 whitewashed churches - one for every day of each year. Paraportiani is, however, the most popular. This is due to its architecture. Seeing this mix of buildings covered in white paint is a stunning sight.

Culture and Customs

Mykonos has an official Greek language. However, English is acceptable. You may find it helpful to have a Greek language dictionary for those beaches that are less well-known. Greeks can also help you navigate if you are having trouble communicating. However, it is best not inadvertently to offend anyone in Greece.

In Greece, making the hand motion for "OK" using your index and thumb is rude. Euro is the official currency. Therefore, always check the exchange rate between the euro and the U.S. dollar before you travel. Service charges may apply when you eat at a restaurant.

What to Eat

These are some of the best foods to try while in Mykonos.

Kopanisti

Mykonos Kopanisti is a high-quality cheese. They also call it the "Greek Roquefort" because it has a thick, creamy texture, intense flavor, and a yellowy-pink color. It is made from sheep's or goat's milk and can be produced in around four months. It can be served as a table or individual cheese and spread on bread and Mostra crusts. Besides, you may store it in the fridge for up to one year after production.

Lazarakia

Lazarakia is sold in Mykonos bakeries every year, and it's a day when the streets and alleys are filled with a delicious scent. These handmade biscuits are covered with sugar or raisins and have the form of a shrouded human, as Lazarus is often depicted in photographs. Their arms are crossed, and they have cloves in place of their eyes. A wreath is also around their heads. It used to be that each housewife would make the same amount of Lazarakia as the children in her family.

Ksinotiri

Ksinotiri is a sharp, sour, and delicious cheese that pairs well with pasta, bread, and tomato. They make this sour cheese by fermenting and straining the buttermilk. Ksinotiri has a strong flavor. It is best to let it dry in the sun to set. This sharp, aromatic cheese is excellent for adding to your Mykonos list of best Greek food.

Sausages and Black-Eyed Beans

Mykonos black-eyed beans are known as kafematika and go well with sausages. Mykonos sausage is not smoked, unlike other regions in Greece. Instead, they dry in the sun. A traditional Mykonos sausage includes savory herbs, pepper, spice, salt, and oregano. Madoupas and Menagias are the most famous island butchers who make these sausages.

Melopita

Made with Mykonos Cheese, tirovolia, this is a sweet pastry. The original recipe uses two sheets of crispy pastry wrapped around a tirovolia cinnamon and honey filling. It is a Mykonian classic. They serve it in a deep-baked tray. It can be done in individual small rolls, however. This sweet is a favorite in Mykonos.

Louza

Louza sausages were traditionally made following the annual pig slaughter. They sometimes call it the Myconian prosciutto. This was a celebration that each household celebrated in the autumn.

The tenderloins and filets were left to marinate in salt for 24 hours. After that, they were dried and flavored using savory herbs and peppers. The meat was then placed into a pig's intestine and allowed to cure for 20-25 days. This produced delicious, tender, and flavorful cooked meat that was often cut into thin slices.

Soumada

You can enjoy non-alcoholic drinks in Mykonos. Soumada is a rosewater and almond-flavored drink all over the island. This sweet drink contains only almonds, rosewater, sugar, and orange blossom water. This refreshing, non-alcoholic beverage is a local favorite. It is perfect for cooling off on hot summer days.

Where to Stay

These are some of the best places to stay in Mykonos. Some luxury boutique hotels are within walking distance of the beach, close to Mykonos Town, and offer stunning sunset views. Most hotels offer a private pool, infinity pool, or plunge pool.

Psarou Beach

Psarou is the island's most vibrant beach and the best in Mykonos. It offers sandy beaches with the perfect temperature, crystal clear water, and outstanding water facilities. There is also a row full of restaurants, bars, and other entertainment. Psarou also hosts N'Ammos, Mykonos's most popular restaurant and beach club. Celebrities are pretty standard here.

Elia Beach

This is the longest beach on the island, stretching 10 kilometers from Mykonos Town to the beautiful sandy beaches. It is also home to many celebrities and influencers. It's also the ideal spot for honeymooners and those wishing to live a glamorous life or spend a day on the beach. It is home to beautiful seaside views and clear water. You can enjoy a variety of watersports at the beach. Many activities are also available, including parasailing, windsurfing, and waterskiing.

Ano Mera

Mykonos' second-largest city, Ano Mera, still retains the small-town feel. It's a beautiful place to learn about the culture. It is also quiet. This place is ideal for a relaxing vacation away from all the noise.

There are still plenty of things to do for those who stay in Mykonos, Ano Mera. The Gyzi Castle is located high above the village. The climb is well worth it, as you will find exciting ruins of Gyzi Castle, an old market, and a cemetery. Paleokastro Monastery, near Ano Mera, is also worth a visit.

Agios Sostis

Agios Stitis is further away from the more popular beaches. It is, therefore, the most peaceful and unspoiled beach on the island. Visitors love the freedom that comes with it. The beach is 250 m long. Tourists can also access the town by following a small path. However, you must rent a bike or take a bus to reach this place. You can park on the road and then walk down to the beach.

Mykonos Town

This town is home to the liveliest place in Mykonos. It boasts a maze of narrow streets with pebble-paved pavements, picturesque scenery, and beautiful surroundings. Moreover, Cyclades architecture dominates the area. This creates the ultimate Mykonos feel. It is also possible to walk the streets of Chora and window-shop. Or, you can stroll along the charming harbor to visit the windmills.

Tagoo

For an unforgettable holiday, this is the place to stay. It combines the bustle of Mykonos Town with tranquility and peace on the beach. There are many excellent accommodations available. You can also enjoy your day at the Agios Stefanos beach or go out at night.

How to Get Around

Depending on your location, moving around to see the best beaches and restaurants would be best. For example, walking to shops, the ferry port, and restaurants is easy if you stay in Mykonos Town.

You can also rent a scooter, ATV, or motorbike for your entire stay. Besides, there are many scenic day trips that you can take to the various beaches of the island. And you don't have to travel far to find your way. Public buses are also a great way to travel around the island. It would be best if you plan your journeys. Some buses take you to the prominent nightclubs in town.

How to Stay Safe

Most of Greece is a safe country to visit, but Mykonos has a lot of crime. Property crimes, such as car and house vandalism, pickpocketing, and other crimes, are high. There are also lots of crowds in the summer months. This, combined with the stark income disparity between seasonal workers and tourists, creates an ideal environment for theft. While on Mykonos, it is worth taking extra precautions to safeguard your valuables.

Even though it has a friendly nature, there are also personal crime risks. You can explore and wander around the city during the day, but be aware of your surroundings at night.
