There are many luxurious hotels all over Amsterdam to facilitate tourists. However, Sofitel Amsterdam Legend The Grand stands out for its convenient location and high-quality service.
The 'Venice of North' Amsterdam is a liberal, historic city famous for its canals and nightlife. Coffee shops, flowers, festival activities, and beautiful buildings also exist. People from all over the world come to visit this beautiful place and experience its rich culture. Moreover, with the highest culture per capita, the city constantly improves its tourist experience.
Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam boasts a rich history spanning over six centuries. In 1411, the structure served two convents. The northern part of the property was dedicated to St. Cecilia's Convent, while the southern part belonged to St. Catherine's Convent.
After the Reformation, Protestantism became Holland's official religion, so the convents were confiscated as city property. However, in 1578, they converted St. Cecilia's convent into royal lodging called "Princenhof" to accommodate essential guests like members of the European royalty. Similarly, St. Catherine's convent became the Admiralty of Amsterdam during the 17th century.
In 1647, they converted Princenhof into the City Hall of Amsterdam. Then, in 1655, the City Hall shifted to a new facility, and the Admiralty occupied the entire property. Later, it again served as the City Hall and played a considerable role in the evolution of art, housing numerous valuable pieces. Afterward, it again lost its status as City Hall, but they didn't put it to any purpose this time.
To preserve its heritage, the City Council passed a resolution making it inviolable. Finally, in 1992, Sofitel Hotels & Resorts took the structure under its wing. They spared no expense in renovating and restoring the property, preserving its exquisite features. Today, this award-winning luxury hotel is one of the best hotels in Amsterdam.
The hotel is situated in the city's heart and enjoys a prime location. It is just by the iconic Dam Square on the edge of the Red Light District. Several historical monuments and the van Gogh Museum are easy to reach. It is also an attractive part of the town because of its history, with numerous attractions just a few minutes away. While some complain about its closeness to the Red Light District, the hotel is calm. The area is safe and remains a bustling center of the central city's activities.
The property is between two canals with museums, restaurants, and shopping areas. Although within walking distance from major tourist sites, guests can hop on a tram at Het Spui, which is merely 4 minutes away on foot. It also has easy access to the subway at Nieuwe Hoogstraat, while the Centraal Station is also simply 10 minute walk away. The Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is also accessible, only a twenty-minute drive from the hotel.
The hotel's conversion from a 15th-century convent to a royal inn, Admiralty, and City Hall has left traces on the structure. You can still see traces of the original convent floor plan. Sofitel Hotels & Resorts hired the French interior architect Sybille de Margerie to style and furnish the building.
Drawing inspiration from its history from a 15th-century convent, he retained its grandeur with high ceilings and white marble floor. Still, he softened the stern monumental look by combining warm colors with his witty designs. Modern fixtures and artworks dot the entire building, while the secluded courtyard offers tranquility amidst the hustle-bustle of the city.
Sofitel Amsterdam offers contemporary yet luxurious rooms. The 179 guest rooms and suites boast an unending ambiance furnished with French elegance and grandeur. Some provide a pleasant courtyard view, while others boast charming canal views.
Each room is richly decorated in cream, soft beige, and lilacs and has a Nespresso machine. All rooms are 24 hours serviced, and a butler service is also available for suites. They also provide infant beds and cots for families who want them.
The bathrooms are also spacious and beautiful. They feature walk-in rain showers, but in specialty suites, there are bathtubs too. Besides, a built-in TV and luxurious Hermès products are mandatory in each.
The most notable eatery here is the Bridges Restaurant. The award-winning fish restaurant also boasts a fantastic breakfast buffet and à la carte options. Guests enjoy food at Restaurant Bridges on marble-topped tables while seated comfortably on upholstered chairs.
However, if someone is after a Mediterranean menu, they should visit the garden bistro Oriole. Here they serve sumptuous Mediterranean dishes in a cozy and inviting interior.
Additionally, the Garden Terrace is perhaps one of Amsterdam's best-kept secrets. Visit for an intimate dinner, a cup of coffee, a refreshing drink, or a business lunch. Sometimes they also extend the services of Bridges, Flying Dutchman, and Oriole here. If the weather permits, they also serve the Grand Afternoon Tea here. Otherwise, the guests get to enjoy the library.
The drinking experience here is the Flying Dutchman bar. It is a traditional Dutch brown café that offers both food and beverages. Guests can enjoy Dutch and local beers and an extensive collection of spirits, whiskies, and snacks.
The hotel houses the luxurious Sofitel Spa, with a heated indoor pool and a well-equipped fitness center. The spa offers luxurious services. Whether a facial or a body toning treatment, they use premium products and provide unique treatment rooms.
Moreover, the fitness center may be small, but it features a Kinesis Training System and Technogym equipment.
Other facilities include complimentary Wi-Fi all over the premises, parking, bicycles, a horse-drawn carriage, and a salon boat for sightseeing. Furthermore, the pool has a good size with a Jetstream and a Jacuzzi. There is also a Turkish steam bath and sauna opposite the pool.
All in all, Sofitel Amsterdam Legend The Grand is an upscale accommodation with a rich history. It is both contemporary and homey, with easy access to some of the city's visit-worthy attractions. So whether you are on a business trip or vacation with your family, it is a place you can call your home away from home.
