The Bela Vista Hotel & Spa is in the southern part of Portugal. It sits on the cliff-top of Praia da Rocha. It also offers a wide and open view of the Atlantic Ocean. Built in 1918 by a wealthy family as their beachside chalet, this iconic property was host to many notable events. It was the Algarve's first hotel in 1934. The hotel extends above the cliffs of Praia de Rocha, with direct beach access. In the early and late 20th century, Praia Da Rocha was dotted with scattered chalets. After the renovation, Presidents Mario Soares, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and Marcelo Soares visited Bela Vista Hotel and Spa.

Design

The hotel was built to serve as a private residence for Antonio Judice de Magalhaes Barros (1879-1960), a canning industrialist. As a guest of honor, the President of the Republik Sidonio Pais inaugurated it in February 1918. Magalhaes's daughters spent their childhood in the "Vila de Nossa Senhora das Dores." There, they were entertained by great politicians and artists. Henrique Vasconcelos, the owner's cousin, converted this villa into a hotel in 1934. Bela Vista was one of the Algarve's first hotels.

Bela Vista is a member in good standing of Relais & Chateaux. It offers 38 rooms and suites. The hotel also has a Michelin-starred VISTA restaurant and a Spa from the French Brand L'Occitane. A lounge and Bistro Restaurant are located near the swimming pool. Moreover, the sea view is breathtaking. Currently, there are three unique buildings on the property: the Main House-Palacete, Blue House, and Garden House.

Garden House is the newest addition to this property. It was built in 2010 and offers sunny balconies overlooking the beach or the Spa. This building also has rooms in a vintage beach house style from the '60s.

Style and Character

The hotel opened in 1934, and the ornate interior design is still intact. The bar has a painted wood ceiling. The original staircase is made of blue and white wall tiles, while the bathroom, once a turret tower, features stained glass windows from that period. Graca Viterbo designed the interior. She used bright yellows and oranges with nautical stripes and a theme of the sea in these light-filled spaces.

The restaurant overlooks the sea and is decorated with corals, shells, and other marine life. L'Occitane Spa is also by Viterbo and has a similar vibrant decor. It offers five treatment areas, a pool with jets, a hammam, and a sauna. The therapists at this Spa are outstanding. The hotel also has a large outdoor pool with palm trees and huge cabanas.

Service and Facilities

The staff is friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. The service is also impeccable throughout the entire hotel. There's a genuine connection between guests and the staff. Moreover, the Spa L'Occitane has a plunge pool, hammam, and sauna. Many treatments use local ingredients and smells. These include relaxing lavender and mint massages and detoxifying almond wrappings.

Rooms

The main building has 11 large rooms and suites. The rooms are boldly colored, like blue, yellow, and white. Many have views of the ocean and original tiles. Room 116 is the jewel of the hotel, with its bathroom housed within the stained-glass turret. The bathrooms of the main building also have showers and tubs. Guerlain designed all amenities in these rooms.

The Blue House is a separate building on the property. It offers seven more suites, all in shades of blue. However, the bathrooms are showers only. In a two-story addition, twenty more rooms look out over the pool. Each room has a coffee machine.
