The Story Behind Villa Dagmar

The source of inspiration for Villa Dagmar comes from a person within the owner's family, Dagmar Bergsten, a modern, worldly, and curious person with a passion for travel, culture, and the social scene. Dagmar Bergsten was a woman who appreciated the good things in life. She often traveled abroad with her friends, enjoying the classic cuisine of the Mediterranean and drawing inspiration from the great artists who dominated Europe in the early 20th century. She was inspired by strong women such as Karin Larsson, Sonia Delaunay, Helle Nice, Gertrude Stein, Hilma af Klint, Peggy Guggenheim, and Kiki De Montparnasse - visionaries who stood for culture, intellect, and modernity.

Villa Dagmar originates in Karl and Dagmar's private home in Båstad, a classic and elegant home surrounded by a beautiful rose garden. Villa Dagmar, then as now, was an escape from the bustling city, an eclectic and cozy place where friends and family gathered during the 1920s-1930s. The villa was filled with fresh flowers and decorated with the extensive art collection the couple acquired during long journeys through Europe and Egypt. In their group were works by old Flemish and Italian masters and French furniture and sculptures from the 18th and 19th centuries. Villa D'Este inspired the accommodation in Rome and Villa San Michele in Capri, which was built by the world-famous author Axel Munthe. Axel, Queen Victoria's doctor and probably a lover, lived on Nybrogatan 25 - 27, where Villa Dagmar is today.

The founders of Villa Dagmar, the Malmström family, have been the successful owners of Hotel Diplomat since the 1960s.
