Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort sits in the cool uplands of Lanai, away from the beach and surrounded by gardens and pine-covered hills. The former Lodge at Koele remains a low-rise retreat, with 92 rooms and four suites across two stories. Its setting is central to the experience: garden paths, sculpture, and private spa spaces take the place of an oceanfront terrace. Guests must be at least 16, with those under 18 accompanied by an adult.
Inside, the Great Room opens toward the gardens through a glass wall more than 80 feet long. The lodge's generous proportions carry through to its collection of contemporary art. Outside, Marc Quinn's enormous flower sculpture, Burning Desire, stands beside a pond, while works by artists including Fernando Botero appear throughout the property. You can follow the sculpture paths independently with a tour map or join a guided walk with an art curator. The collection rewards time on foot between the buildings.

The 450-square-foot Koele Room has a furnished lanai looking into the gardens, with a king bed or two double beds. Large windows bring that greenery into view from indoors, and the bathroom has a marble vanity and spacious shower. These rooms occupy the first and second floors and accommodate two guests. For friends traveling together, the double-bed option is a practical distinction from the king-only Deluxe category.
Koele Deluxe Rooms sit at the ends of the building and measure 500 square feet. Their furnished balconies or patios retain the garden outlook, with more interior space around a king bed. The Koele Suite makes a larger change to daily life: its 790 square feet separate the bedroom from the living space, and a dining area seats four. A furnished balcony provides another place to sit, allowing a meal or conversation to continue outside the bedroom.
The second-floor Kaiholena Suite has 1,200 square feet and an in-room fireplace. A full bathroom combines a walk-in shower with a separate tub, while a powder room serves the living areas. Its one-bedroom arrangement can expand to two bedrooms by connecting a Koele Deluxe Room, subject to availability. That connection allows two couples or friends to stay together while retaining separate bedrooms and bathrooms.
Sensei organizes its approach around three paths: Move, Nourish, and Rest. These ideas shape the class calendar, private consultations, and dining, but a stay need not follow a fixed retreat schedule. Room-only reservations allow wellness services to be booked separately, while guided programs arrange private sessions around individual interests. A guest interested in a few yoga classes can therefore plan a different week from someone seeking a closely scheduled series of appointments.
Two movement studios, a yoga pavilion, and lakeside platforms give classes their own settings. Aerial yoga brings suspended hammocks into the practice, while other sessions focus on strength, mobility, or meditation. Private instruction is available alongside small-group classes, and the fitness center stays open around the clock. Away from the timetable, the Sensei Library holds more than 700 books on subjects including Hawaii, exploration, and movement. Reading chairs, chess, and a pool table make it a place to spend an unscheduled evening.
The spa is arranged around ten private hales, each measuring about 1,000 square feet. Hale means home in Hawaiian, and these spaces have considerably more room than a treatment cabin. Indoor and outdoor showers, an infrared sauna, steam facilities, an ofuro soaking tub, and a private plunge pool accompany a lounging area. A hale can be reserved for one person or a couple, either for a treatment or for personal use. The menu includes lomilomi, the Hawaiian massage tradition, as well as couples' appointments. A separate salon provides hair services, manicures, and pedicures. Bathing and lounging within the hale remain part of the appointment, with time reserved for using the space alongside the treatment itself.
A separate onsen garden has soaking tubs set among greenery, reached along softly lit paths. They are distinct from the private facilities attached to the spa hales. The heated outdoor swimming pool has two 25-meter lap lanes, with three whirlpools nearby. Loungers and poolside dining keep the pool useful beyond a morning swim, while the garden tubs offer a smaller-scale setting for soaking. Neither requires the drive down to the coast.
Sensei by Nobu occupies a glass pavilion beside a reflecting pond, with indoor and outdoor tables and a communal table seating 16. The Japanese-influenced cooking draws on Nobu Matsuhisa's repertoire and produce grown on Lanai. Dinner choices include an omakase menu and a vegan counterpart, so the restaurant has room for a longer, chef-led meal as well as individual dishes. Glass walls keep the pond and planting in view, giving the dining room a close connection to the landscape after a day spent around the gardens.
Koele Garden Bar sits just off the lobby, serving drinks and lighter food with garden views; the restaurant menu is also available on request. Poolside dining brings salads and sandwiches to a lounge chair. In-room dining runs around the clock, making breakfast on the lanai or a late supper possible without returning to a dining room.
The Love Lanai Cultural Advisors lead workshops and outings that introduce the island through its traditions. Lei making and lauhala weaving involve working with natural materials, while guided cultural tours explore places and stories beyond the resort. Shoreline fishing and net throwing are among the arranged experiences. Nearby Lanai City adds local shops, galleries, and the Lanai Culture and Heritage Center to an afternoon out, with a resort shuttle connecting guests to town.
Golf also draws guests toward the coast. Manele Golf Course is an eighteen-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature layout, with lava outcrops and holes played along ocean cliffs. Sensei guests can arrange a round or private instruction there, including a shorter Ocean Nine option. Back in the uplands, the resort's eighteen-hole putting course provides a much smaller outing. It is separate from Manele, which requires a transfer.
Lanai Air connects Honolulu with Lanai Airport, where onward ground transport can be coordinated with the resort. Flight connections and transfers should be arranged in advance. The inter-hotel shuttle also links Sensei with Four Seasons Resort Lanai for beach service and dining. Swimming pools at that sister property are reserved for guests staying there. The drive brings a distinct change of scenery, from Koele's inland gardens to the shoreline at Hulopoe Bay.
