The Dewberry Charleston

The Dewberry Charleston reflects the elegance and restraint of old Charleston. It was inspired by the L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building (built in 1964). At The Dewberry, John Dewberry's idea of "Southern Reimagined" manifests itself in every aspect of the establishment. Architects and designers worked for eight years to bring the hotel's vision to reality; They shared Dewberry's vision of presenting Charleston in a personal light. The outcome is a consciously designed juxtaposition of the past and the contemporary. It redefines what is possible when historic preservation is a priority.

Overview

See the city through the eyes of a lifelong resident of Charleston, John Dewberry. When it comes to The Dewberry, honesty takes precedence over duty. Moreover, every detail provides guests with a sense of old-world charm. This is all while still providing a taste of modern luxury.

Limewash is made from a secret recipe. Decorative metalwork by hand. Furniture from a bygone era. Works of art that make you think. Over eight years, designers, architects, and artists collaborated closely to create The Dewberry.

The Dewberry Charleston is also famous for its attentive service. From enthusiastic bellhops to a friendly bartender making traditional drinks at the brass bar in the middle of the hotel's main lobby area. Moreover, the lobby and living room include The Danby Vermont marble floors. There are also a variety of seating options. Guests may use these for either a business or social gathering. Furthermore, natural light floods into the room via plate-glass enclosed windows. The wood paneling with brass accents also offers warmth and character.

Style and Character

For eight years, John Dewberry collaborated with architects and designers to renovate this brick and marble edifice. President Kennedy was initially commissioned and inaugurated in 1963.

The Dewberry hotel went from Charleston-based Urban Electric Co. to private collections and custom-made fabrics. It is a refreshing contrast to Charleston's colonial ambiance. Instead, it is a sophisticated celebration of the artistic contours of mid-century modern design.

Furthermore, a walled courtyard reminiscent of a classic Charleston garden stands at the back of the hotel. Besides, abstract artwork by notable painters is present throughout the hotel.

Location

Overlooking the bustling Marion Square, the Dewberry offers beautiful views. This is where many of Charleston's festivals and events take place. Its address is 334 Meeting Street. Moreover, it's only a short walk from the Square to King Street. Here, you'll find a wide variety of stores, galleries, and restaurants.

There is also the College of Charleston and the South Carolina Aquarium. Furthermore, you may reach Downtown attractions like the Battery and the East River beaches in about 15 minutes by car.

Rooms and Suites

Make yourself at home in any one of the 155 guest rooms. These include custom-designed Stickley armor with floral patterns. These patterns are inspired by the area, as well as marble-covered bathrooms. Moreover, you may not want to leave this Charleston hotel. This is mainly due to the bedding of Irish linens, chef-curated seasonal in-room bars, and more.

Additionally, the rooms and suites have hand-crafted furniture. There are also books from the Charleston Library Society. Plus, unique artwork by local artists. On the higher stories, floor-to-ceiling windows provide great views of the city and the harbor. You can enjoy Callie's Biscuits, bourbon drinks, and chocolates. Plus, minibars offer enticing but pricey regional specialties.

King suite bathrooms include soaking tubs and walk-in rain shower combos. Plus, there are unique Dewberry herbal bath products. They're all marble and brass, of course. Furthermore, suites with ample sitting space are the grand suites. Book a Charleston Flat if you need a lot of space. There is a nice view of a church steeple from the soaking tub in the "07" room at the Dewberry. This is on the southwest corner of the hotel.

Restaurants and Bars

High-quality, ingredient-driven meals are served in a relaxed atmosphere at Charleston's New Culinary Hub. It is reminiscent of a typical French brasserie.

Henrietta's

The food at Henrietta's is inspired by the abundance of the Low Country and Southern hospitality. Here, the culinary provides locally sourced, internationally-inspired meals. This is with the unpretentious attitude of a typical French brasserie. Yet, Henrietta's is more than a restaurant. It's a relic of a bygone age in the Deep South.

Meals at the table also provide a chance to try out new cuisines. Besides, check out artist Clifford Bailey's Roaring Twenties-inspired paintings. You'llseee them when you're eating in the Mahogany-paneled dining room or onae bar area pews.

Furthermore, an old oak tree that originally existed on the site has been rescued. They used it to create a bar table for Henrietta's outside dining area. Known as the Tree House, it's a beautiful spot if the weather permits.

The Living Room

Experience the warm welcome and effortless charm of The Living Room. The Living Room is a warm and welcome spot for a cup of coffee in the morning. It's also perfect for an afternoon drink. Moreover, it has mid-century furniture, a reading library, and a brass bar. You can also appreciate the work of local artist Hugh Jeffers. He made wooden bowls from the knots of a white oak tree 150-year-old.

Citrus Club

The Dewberry's 8th-floor terrace offers the tallest rooftop bar in Charleston and the whimsical rooftop loungeat Citrus Club. Moreover, it is famed for its steepled skyline and sea-skimming vistas. Citrus Club is a private members-only club. Here, guests may enjoy citrus-inspired beverages and light nibbles.

Spa and Wellness

Signature treatments incorporate a combination of antioxidants, marine extracts, and botanicals. This spa has cypress-paneled treatment rooms. Plus, there are therapies based on local botanicals and marine extracts.

In particular, the "relaxation chamber" is charming. High-end cardio equipment and free weights are also available in the fitness area. Besides, yoga is available upon request. Guests may also use the hotel's complimentary bicycles.

Takeaway

Experience charm at this mid-century hotel in the heart of downtown Charleston. The Dewberry has turned a derelict federal building into a modern, luxurious 155-room hotel with event spaces. For eight years, John Dewberry worked tirelessly to resurrect the hotel. Dewberry Charleston will surely make your stay memorable with all the uniqueness and hospitality.
