There are trade-offs. Entry rooms are compact, views vary by category, and the spa is deliberately small. The hotel is less compelling for someone seeking a pool, extensive family facilities or the ceremony of an old-style grand hotel. For a traveler who would rather be near Madison Square Park than in the busiest tourist corridors, however, its balance of design, neighborhood and privacy is unusually coherent.
